Ameya Yokocho Market

アメ横Ameya Yokocho (アメヤ横丁), often abbreviated Ameyoko (アメ横), is an open-air market along the west side of the elevated railway (constructed in 1925) between Ueno Station and Okachimachi Station of the JR Yamanote Line. The street is about 400 meters (1,312 feet) long and shops here mainly sell foods and clothes. In late December, the street gets extremely crowded.
When the Second World War ended, this area became a black market selling various goods which were essential to make a living. (For a while after the war, people could not buy enough things in legal markets so they had to use black markets.) Of course it's no longer a black market, but it retains some of the atmosphere of those days (needless to say, it's a safe place now).
