Meiji Jingu is a Shinto shrine which was established in 1920 to honor Emperor Meiji and his wife Empress Shoken, and is one of the most notable shrines in Japan. The vast forest covering its precincts was artificially created on a land where it used to be a plain, in accordance with the Japanese traditional notion of what sacred place should be like. The inner garden is famous for its iris blossoms in June. The main buildings were destroyed in WWII but were rebuilt with wood after the war. At the northern end of the grounds stands its treasure meuseum (500 yen), which was built with concrete in 1921 in a traditional style. This shrine attracts the largest number of visitors in Japan for Hatsumode in early January.
