This site, established as the shogunate-run medicinal herb garden in 1684 to provide commoners with herbs, is now a botanical garden belonging to Tokyo University. Though rather small as a botanical garden, it has a Japanese stroll garden dating back to the feudal times. The Western style building standing at the northwestern corner of the garden was built in 1876 as a medical school and is now used as the annex of the University Museum of Tokyo University.
